Common Franchise Investment Levels
Single Franchise - This is the beginning level and common form of franchise participation. The franchisee is given the exclusive rights to operate a single unit franchise in a specified area. It could be a home-based business or have a physical location, full time or even part time.
Multi Unit Franchise - The franchisee owns and operates more than one franchise unit. The franchisee is typically less involved with each individual unit, but manages the multiple unit operations.
Area Development Franchising - The franchisee will own an exclusive territory and will agree to a development schedule for the number of units they must open and operate. There is typically a significant reduction in franchise fees and possibly ongoing royalties. Area Developer franchisees usually have managers for each unit.
Master Franchising
Master Franchising is one of the best kept secrets in business ownership today. Masters are typically very lucrative when available. Many franchisors do not offer them, and when available they generally sell quickly because the investment is relative low and flexibility is greatest at this level. The Master Franchisee (or regional developer) buys the exclusive franchise rights in a large area, usually a metropolitan area or even an entire state. In the process of developing the area the Master usually sells single or multiple unit franchises and keeps most of the franchise fees paid by the new owners. In addition, the Master Owner usually gets half of the on-going royalties paid by these single & multiple unit owners. Distribution of products through these franchisees in the master area may create additional income. Recent surveys show that Master Owners experience annual income of $150,000 to $1,000,000 or more, while building equity of $500,000 to $10,000,000 or more.
